Messiah the High Priest and King: Yeshua in the Hebrew Bible

Here is an interesting observation that shows the Kingship and the High Priesthood of the Messiah in connection to the name Jeshua/Yeshua/ישוע (Jesus) in the Hebrew Bible.

Zechariah 6:11-13 (NASB)

11 Take silver and gold, make an ornate crown and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. 12 Then say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the LORD. 13 Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices.”’

Notice that Zechariah calls him Joshua the son of Jehozadak. Joshua/Jeshua son of Jehozadak was of Aaronic/Levite lineage.

In the book of Ezra this same individual is called Jeshua-in Hebrew Yeshua ישוע-the Hebrew name of Jesus the Messiah. As he is also called in the first Book of Chronicles.

1 Chronicles 24:11 (NASB)

11 the ninth for Jeshua ישוע, the tenth for Shecaniah,

Ezra 3:8 (NASB)

8 Now in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua ישוע the son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all who came from the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and appointed the Levites from twenty years and older to oversee the work of the house of the LORD.

In the Hebrew language the name Yeshua stands out more because the spelling is identical to the spelling in the New Testament.
The Book of Ezra - The Hebrew Bible (The Old Testament)

The Book of Matthew - The New Testament (The Geneology of Yeshua the Messiah

In Hebrew the word for salvation is ישועה which is a female noun. The male version of the word salvation ישועה is ישוע .ישוע is not used as a part of speech.

Matthew 1:21 (NASB)

21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, (Yeshua, ישוע Salvation) for He will save His people from their sins.”

Now have a look at Psalm 110 where the Messiah is described as King and High-Priest - not from the lineage of Aaron.

As regarding the Kingship, the Messiah is from the lineage of King David.

Romans 1:3 (NASB)

3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,

Isaiah 11:1-5 (NASB)

1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,

And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.

2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him,

The spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The spirit of counsel and strength,

The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

3 And He will delight in the fear of the LORD,

And He will not judge by what His eyes see,

Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;

4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor,

And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth;

And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,

And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.

5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins,

And faithfulness the belt about His waist.

Isaiah 11:10 (NASB)

10 Then in that day

The nations will resort to the root of Jesse,

Who will stand as a signal for the peoples;

And His resting place will be glorious.

As concerning the priesthood, the Messiah is a High Priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Psalms 110 (NASB)

A PSALM OF DAVID.

1 The LORD says to my Lord:

“Sit at My right hand

Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

2 The LORD will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,

“Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”

3 Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power;

In holy array, from the womb of the dawn,

Your youth are to You as the dew.

4 The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind,

“You are a priest forever

According to the order of Melchizedek.”

5 The Lord is at Your right hand;

He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath.

6 He will judge among the nations,

He will fill them with corpses,

He will shatter the chief men over a broad country.

7 He will drink from the brook by the wayside;

Therefore He will lift up His head.

Hebrews 5:9-10 (NASB)

9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:11-17 (NASB)

11 Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also. 13 For the one concerning whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. 15 And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is attested of Him,

“YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER

ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”
